Forget about cat and less, use bat instead
September 24, 2019 • ♨ 1 min readToday let’s look at a simple but convenient console utility for viewing the contents of files — bat. It has taken the best of cat and less, and brought some colors. Unlike the usual utilities for viewing the content, bat offers illumination of a wide range of programming languages and markups, with the numbering of lines as in your favorite code editor. One more advantage is integration with git. On a screenshot below you can see the removed and added lines are designated on a field on the left by signs +/-. If the file is large, bat will output it page by page, as less does. Bat can even highlight man!
The rest of the possibilities are in the official repository.
